Toward the end of March through the beginning of April Japan (the whole country) is covered with beautiful cherry blossoms. Sakura, it is said, represents the span of our lives in an especially dramatic way. The sakura’s life starts as a tiny, tight bud. It gradually becomes more and more plump as the weather grows milder. Finally the plump buds all at once burst into gorgeous blossoms. It is sensational and powerful, like the very birth of us humans. sakura fellBut the gorgeous blossoms last only a week or so, and at the height of their beauty, instead of dying on the tree, the healthy petals fall to the ground all at once, creating yet another wondrous sight of beauty. Soon the fallen petals disappear in the spring wind and rain. We think our own lives should be like sakura – one enjoys great success at one point of our existence and then life ends with great satisfaction, leaving no pain nor agony behind. Let’s discuss this philosophical subject in Japan while admiring the beautiful flower!
